The first time I attended a Pittsburg ArtWalk was in 2011. It was held at Immigrant Park and I had driven in from Wichita, with my oldest son, to watch a friend Raku fire pottery on Broadway. The event had several artists, some live music and several different food vendors. Looking back, it was a fun event and I remember telling my friend (now husband) that the event needs to be bigger, “Pittsburg needs more color!”.
Well, Pittsburg now has more color! Hopefully it will continue to add more color to the businesses and local businesses. As a selected artist for SEK ArtFest’s mural project, I had the opportunity to add my own color to Broadway Street. In 2018, Signet Coffee Roasters gained a unique and colorful mural that peeks out from behind the big trees. That was the year that Heather approached my husband and I about attending an ArtWalk meeting and consider becoming members of the committee. Being part of a group of people who share similar interests of community and seeing it thrive and grow is phenomenal.
ArtWalk Committee meetings are NOT boring. We do NOT dread attending them. We DO look forward to going to meetings. They DO make a difference. We DO get things assigned and delegated. WE ARE friends on and off the social media pages. We DO love it when we get new members. We LOVE continuing to give Pittsburg, Ks exactly what it needs. It is what I need, what our kids and neighbors need, and what we all could use more of. LOVE. Love of art. Love of music. Love of community. Love of people of all ages. It is sharing that love of friends, family, food, and fun, all while getting out to see or hear something new and meet someone new that keeps me going to every single ArtWalk.
